How to Spring Clean Your House

There’s nothing quite like the arrival of spring sunshine to get us in the mood to give our homes a bit of TLC. Here are our top tips to help you spring clean your house.

Declutter

view of home office

Before you can begin your spring cleaning, you need to declutter! The first task in each room should be to separate all the items into three piles: keep, donate and throw away. If you haven’t used something for over a year, perhaps it’s time to let it go by donating to someone who could make use of it. If it is damaged, old, or not useful, recycle or bin it. Once you have only the items you wish to keep, find everything a home.

If you’re still a bit cramped, maybe it’s time to consider a home office in your garden, to give you a dedicated work area while freeing up all-important space within your home, or a movie room to store and watch all your favourite DVDs.

Ditch the harsh chemicals

Your household store cupboard may be the answer to getting your house cleaner than it’s ever been before while also avoiding harsh chemicals. Stock up on vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and a few lemons and you’re ready to go.

  • Vinegar is the perfect bathroom cleaner; mix with water in an old spray bottle, spray on your surfaces, leave overnight and wash off in the morning.
  • Bicarbonate of soda has many household uses, but a little-known use is to sprinkle on your mattress as a deodoriser, leave for a few hours and vacuum off.
  • Lemon rinds in a cup of water, popped in the microwave for one minute will make cleaning the inside of your microwave a breeze.

Organise your drawers

Getting your drawers and cabinets in order will save you time when looking for things you need, and will also make everything look neat and organised. Drawer separators are your friend, but you don’t need to buy them; reuse shoe or grocery boxes to split up space in your drawers and give everything its own specific place.

Freshen up your soft furnishings

Home Office, Warwick

Spring is a great time to tackle the big laundry tasks that you only need to do a few times a year, such as curtains, duvets, sofa throws and cushion covers. Always check the labels as some materials may need special attention or cleaning methods. A quick tip to keep your curtains looking fresh throughout the year is to pop them in the tumble drier for 15 minutes, if the material allows, and then hang them back up straight away for a crinkle-free freshen up.

Get your wardrobe in order

If your wardrobes are bursting at the seams, it’s time to have a clear out, again using the ‘keep, donate, throw away’ method. Keep your wardrobe more organised still by only having seasonally appropriate clothing inside and pack the rest up until the time is right for them again. You could even go a step further and organise by colour, sleeve length or style if you’re really in the mood to get your wardrobe looking wonderful.
